SARETI

The South African Research Ethics Training Initiative (SARETI) is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, Africa-based education and training programme in health research ethics based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

  • SARETI aims to build African capacity for the ethical review of health research and to strengthen Africa’s institutional training capacity to achieve and sustain this.

  • SARETI provides a variety of educational programmes, varying from short courses to full masters and a doctoral programme.

  • SARETI staff represent many facets of research ethics in South Africa and are selected from leading South African and international universities.
OUR PROGRAMMES:

SARETI PhD Programme

The SARETI Research Ethics Leadership Programme offers doctoral training in health research ethics. The main goal is to train high-level African research ethicists who will produce locally and internationally relevant scholarship and leadership in research ethics in and for Africa.

SARETI Masters

The SARETI (Masters) degree MSocSc (Health Research Ethics) is a structured social sciences masters with a mix of online and face-to-face modular and applied training. It is aimed at capacitating lawyers, social scientists and other professionals with expertise in ethical matters.

SARETI I to III

The SARETI I to III programmes were offered between 2002 and 2018 in collaboration with other leading research ethics funders and units globally and in South Africa. SARETI I to III mainly offered masters level degree, training and support programmes.

Funding

SARETI receives funding from the Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland, United States of America Grant Numbers 5 R25 TW01599-19 and 5 D43 TW011240-03.
