SARETI PhD Project
The oldest and most established Africa-based masters programme in health research ethics, the South African Research Ethics Training Initiative (SARETI) now offers a PhD to equip African research ethics scholars with advanced theoretical, applied and leadership skills.
By training a cohort of six to eight highly qualified African research ethicists, SARETI will significantly improve the continent’s capacity to lead the application of and research in health research ethics in a way that is both locally and internationally relevant. Such high-calibre research ethics leadership will contribute to present and future global demands for training, consultation, scholarship and leadership required for health system reform.
The PhD Project has three focus areas:
- Improving health research systems in Africa through research ethics leadership
- Improving effectiveness and efficiency of ethics review systems through research ethics leadership
- Maximising value of research in Africa through research ethics leadership
The SARETI PhD project will enroll a single four-year cohort of six to eight sponsored candidates for a doctoral thesis and a rich selection of supplementary, ‘not-for-credit’ online and face-to-face training workshops and seminars on key topics in research ethics in Africa and globally.
The SARETI research ethics leadership project is made possible through NIH/FIC funding, grant number 5 D43 TW011240-03, to the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
