SARETI IV Masters
The SARETI IV Masters in Social Science (Health Research Ethics) aims to advance African capacity for the ethics review and implementation of health research. It comprises a mix of online and face-to-face modular and applied training directed at lawyers, social scientists and other professionals.
The programme aims to train 20 students, who will be equipped with both the academic knowledge and the practical skills needed to contribute to strengthening both the teaching of and the research into research ethics in Africa. SARETI students will also receive the skills needed to participate as members of research ethics committees (RECs), thus facilitating enhanced regulation of health research in Africa.
SARETI IV will focus on:
- Creating a conducive and supportive learning environment that provides students with substantial theoretical and practical learning in research ethics;
- Providing students with a solid foundation in moral philosophy, bioethics, research-related laws, research design and methodology;
- Exposing students to key ethical issues facing the African continent, including fair research contracting, African ethics and the ethical issues relating to research with children;
- Exposing students to the world of work through site visits to research centres, attendance at REC (IRB) meetings and practical learning in terms of institutionalising ethics review;
- Providing students with specific skills workshops to develop their ability to think critically, write academically and present work coherently; and
- Providing students with both individually tailored mentoring and a virtual support community to guide them in the early stages of their careers.
This programme has been funded by a grant from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the Fogarty International Center (FIC) (award number 5R25TW001599-19).
